*this post is more related to my non-pad projects, though it is sort of related to my pad sewing as well.
my high school art teacher once told me while i was working on a shawl in class (she liked me enough that she let me work on commission pieces for credit because at least i was doing something slightly art related) that the materials that you work with have a mind of their own- a successful project is succesful in part because the materials allow it to be succesful, like they have a say in the matter.
what i think that she was getting at was more that it has to do with the mindset that we approach the project with but it’s still an interesting phenomena to notice.
i think that every fiber artist has had it happen to them at least once- you pick up the perfect yarn or the perfect fabric in the perfect color with the perfect hand. you have the perfect projefct in mind. you finally hit gauge or the pieces line up perfectly. and then you start dropping stitches or you can’t get it to come out straight. the stitch pattern looks like crap. you tear out, cast on again, still no good.
the yarn (or fabric or whatever) just doesn’t want to ‘be’ that finished piece. it may be the perfect yarn for a different project and the next thing you cast on with it may even come out better than you hope but for whatever reason that particular project is a no go.
i’ve even had it happen with the recommended yarn.
i’m sure that there’s some sort of logical explanation for it or just plain dumb luck and coincedence but i’ve thought about that quote for awhile now, especially when i’m struggling with projects that i have no good reason having problems with.
