materials with a mind of their own

*this post is more related to my non-pad projects, though it is sort of related to my pad sewing as well.

my high school art teacher once told me while i was working on a shawl in class (she liked me enough that she let me work on commission pieces for credit because at least i was doing something slightly art related) that the materials that you work with have a mind of their own- a successful project is succesful in part because the materials allow it to be succesful, like they have a say in the matter.

what i think that she was getting at was more that it has to do with the mindset that we approach the project with but it’s still an interesting phenomena to notice.

i think that every fiber artist  has had it happen to them at least once- you pick up the perfect yarn or the perfect fabric in the perfect color with the perfect hand. you have the perfect projefct in mind. you finally hit gauge or the pieces line up perfectly. and then you start dropping stitches or you can’t get it to come out straight. the stitch pattern looks like crap. you tear out, cast on again, still no good.

the yarn (or fabric or whatever) just doesn’t want to ‘be’ that finished piece. it may be the perfect yarn for a different project and the next thing you cast on with it may even come out better than you hope but for whatever reason that particular project is a no go.

i’ve even had it happen with the recommended yarn.

i’m sure that there’s some sort of logical explanation for it or just plain dumb luck and coincedence but i’ve thought about that quote for awhile now, especially when i’m struggling with projects that i have no good reason having problems with.

Future projects and Updates

- I’m working on a new style core for the winged pads. Currently, I don’t like the fact that the normal core that I use for the pads doesn’t extend into the wings. I’m working on a larger core that extends in the majority of the wing.

-I’m currently working on another Fluffy pad but the next pad that I make should be a prototype for a new winged pad. I’ve heard a lot of feedback that people like the shape of the Fluffy pads but wish there were a winged option, so I’m working on making a winged version of that particular pad. Currently the plan is to prototype the pad with the normal core (the core wouldn’t extend into the wings) but in the future I will attempt to increase the size of the core so more of the core extends into the wings.

- I’d like to start working on other non-pad items to stock. Mid has been poking at me to make some bags, but I want to wait until I can get a machine to start worrying about anything that has a casing. I would however like to make small trinket bags that are about the size of a deck of Tarot cards. I’d like to get back into tote making as well.

- I am moving out of my apartment by the end of next week, so I am not sure how often I am going to be able to maintain stock. I’m hoping that there will not be a major disruption in my ability to stock. As it is, I am working on making sure that I have as much stock up as possible until then, and will strive to make sure that this blog doesn’t backslide again.

- Sales! I will be offering a monthly sale on all stock. This month’s sale is a 25% discount on all red items. August’s sale will be a 25% discount on all orange or yellow items.
